It’s the month of October, which is recognized by many as the month of Halloween. When I think of Halloween, I think of costumes, pumpkins, and candy. I remember going trick-or-treating as a child with my sisters. We wanted to visit as many houses as possible, maximizing the amount of candy we received. When we got home, our parents made us wait while they sifted through the candy – pulling out partially opened or suspicious looking candies. I remember being so excited when they said “Ok, dig in!” I would have eaten candy all night long if they would have let me. I remember being frustrated when they said to me, “Ok, that’s the last piece.”
Now that I’m a parent, I understand the wisdom in limiting the amount of candy your child eats. If my kids eat candy, it affects their energy level – it really does. They already have a lot of energy, but if I let them eat as much Halloween candy as they wanted, they would transform into miniature Tazmanian Devils!
On Halloween night, we take our boys trick-or-treating – fully equipped with costumes, pumpkin flashlights, and plastic orange pumpkins. We go from house to house and their pumpkins literally get filled to the brim with candy. When we get home, my husband and I sift through the candy, just like my parents did, pulling out partially opened or suspicious looking candy pieces, as well as candies that would become choking hazards (i.e. jawbreakers are not suitable for a 3 year old). We let the boys pick 5 pieces of candy each. After that, we put their candy in a Ziploc bag – one for each of them labeled with their name.
Once the bags are filled and zipped up, I put the candy high up in the cupboard, mainly so they can’t easily access them and pull out candy whenever they feel like it. I pull the candy down for rewards or for a treat while we are watching a movie as a family. As a mom, I want what is best for my family. I think that candy rationing is the way to go!

Shannon is a wonderful blogger and a terrific mom. It was a great idea for you to feature her, and she gave some fabulous ideas for Halloween, we have always done the rationing thing with our boys when they were little, using Ziploc bags with their names.
Thanks for a great article!!
